You know, I didn't notice the sad face. It was the head gear and firmly fitted dress that surprised me. I've never seen a Mary Magdalene presented like this before - as a young woman with a young woman's body. Perhaps she's just been told of the arranged marriage with the older Joseph and this has made her sad.
The colors are really impressive considering the age in which it was painted. The floral print of the fabric of the sleeves is a familiar feel and pattern of fabrics today.
