The perfect static cemented posture of the aristocrat is beautifully captured in the bottom picture, dramatically emphasized by its complete opposite - the relaxed posture of the dog.
The nude above is - what can I say - simply gorgeous.
I prefer subtlety like this in the nudes. They are more mesmerizing and mysterious and a portrayal of the sensual more difficult perhaps.
However, I know Titian is a big seller, 50 million a canvas. or something like that. But I actually prefer Geromes work, even though there is nothing subtle about his nudes at all.
It seems to me Titians drawback is that he was caught in that time when they formally made women homely, and a new age where a more realistic style was coming about.
Like The Grand Odalesque, for example. Great painting, ugly face. It was a standard of anglo beauty that never quite reached the beautiful part.
Looking at Titian I always get the feeling he was taught that standard but then tried to evolve past it, but the influence of it still remains on their faces.

Me too, I prefer the nudity to be subtle.
