Nero

Now this is different. Nero is usually represented as the supreme narcissist which he was by all accounts. Here he appears lost and alone. Perhaps the artist was in love with him. There is no sign of a brutal dictator in this painting. Not to me.

That is what struck me about this one. It is not the view you think of with him.

he does look lost and alone, doesn't he?

Perhaps that was the artists purpose, not love, but a sympathy for the boy he undoubtably was. Perhaps he wanted us to remember that under all the history, Nero was simply a lost soul trying to cope with the life he was given.

It is a lovely work, very tranquil.

Of course - the child within. The child that was. The misunderstood. Yes, it is a sympathetic portrayal.
