Self Portrait as a Female Martyr

Some of Artemisia Gentileschia's work is disturbing but after reading snippets of her life and just aching for her, I saw this self portrait that is in Wikipedia.  She certainly was a female martyr in all that she endured and yet, there were not very many women who followed her at that time, I fear.

The perfection in this hand.  Prior to it's being crushed no doubt.

I looked at this beside the painting in your last post, Christy and it could be the same woman to me. What do you think?

I think it is, I think she was using herself as her own model for her female character images.

There is one of her nudes I am sure is a self portrait (other than this one) but it is only speculation. But yes, I agree, i think this one is also her.

Since she was a female, she could have had other women pose and not cause a public stir, but then again, why use others when you can just look in a mirror?

BTW Thank you for this one. I was trying to decide which of her self portraits I like best, I keep thinking this one, but I really like the other too, the one of her actually painting, done in browns.

I like that it shows her as an artist, caught in a moment of focus.

She was very talented. No doubt a prodigy.

The quality of her work is astounding. I believe that it equals any of those we hold up as the best of the best. And to have suffered so much and still maintained her skill, she is truly remarkable.

As are most artists and creative people throughout time and place.
