Wow! This is great. He certainly looks too strong and muscle-bound to be dying. Perhaps it's a metaphor for the death of his societal, spiritual and creative culture?

A metaphore for the death of his people perhaps.

So many dead. So many the mind can not grasp the magnitude of it.

Women, children, the young and vital, the old and helpless.

I think their deaths are the death we see in this chief.

Exactly! The death of his entire nation. His race. What sorrow could be greater for a noble chieftain?
