Even more North Korean art

Here's something not so socialist: an automotive billboard ad.

The woman on the right, in traditional Korean dress, is typical of North Korean posters and billboards, socialist or otherwise.

The car is made by Pyeonghwa Motors, which is a joint venture of the Unification Church and a North Korean government company. This particular model's name translates to "Whistle."

Wikipedia says that the company's annual output is at most 400 cars, because there is very little demand for cars in North Korea (besides, gassing up will be a challenge too). Nevertheless, it is significant enough that South Korea's president visited the factory during his Pyongyang visit last year.

A whole 400 cars.

Ummm. Wow.

Now if they could only produce some food.

Did yall see the thing about the eye doctor who went into North Korea to do cataract surgery on North Koreans?

I swear, the way they reacted to seeing again, watching all of them go up and praise kim jong il...

I totally can not get that out of my head. It was even creepier to me than the smuggled videos of public executions.

I think about it all the time. It is so hard to understand what is happening to those people.

It is one thing to say 'Well, the whole country is brainwashed.'

It is quite another to actually see it.

It may be the single most disturbing thing I have ever watched.

This is a Kim family-based theocracy, plain and simple.

Of course, South Korean right-wingers will tell me that ALL commies are like that - which is not necessarily true.

And of course, South Korean right-wingers have their own theocracy - the worship of Prophet W.

Don't forget that Reverend Moon plays both sides - making cars in North Korea AND funding the Republicans in the US. Looks like he wants to keep both sides alive so that he can profit from their mutual animosities and warmongering.

What I saw had nothing at all to do with being 'a commie'.

That place is a cult, plain and simple. A nation cult where the most horrible things you can imagine live.

There isn't any political philosophy to it, nor is it religious. It is like the worship of a pharoh, as you said, a 'god king'.

It is freaking unnattural and scary.

I can not get the images of that documentary out of my head. I have never ever seen people act like that. Not before, not since.

The Koreans seem to be predisposed to such fanatical behavior.

Not only does it explain the cult of the Kim family in North Korea, but also Confucian fanaticism in the royal era and today's Moonies. And the Korean-American worship of the Republicans and W.

The Confucian mentality (utter and complete worship of a superior enlightened foreign entity) even extends to the most unlikely of demographics - gay men. Western gay men hate having Korean boyfriends because the Korean guy would excessively worship the Western guy and make him uncomfortable as a result.
